Series Classes: The Basics and Sew Much More
Beginning With The Basics: An Introduction to The Building Blocks of Sewing This class is geared for the brand new or returning sewist and has been designed to teach you the most fundamental aspects of sewing. If you’ve been dying to get started on your own sewing project or if you’ve been sewing on your own and want to really learn the basics, this class is for you. In four short weeks you’ll acquire numerous sewing skills including how to use a sewing machine, sewing straight and curved seams, linings, buttonholes, simple zippers, seam finishing, pockets, embellishment with decorative stitches, and hand sewing! Projects include a pin cushion, a trendy scarf, a pillow with buttonhole closures, a zippered makeup bag, and a shoulder bag with tied straps. Each project will help you learn garment sewing skills and you’ll even have five finished projects at the end of the course! Cost: $225 for the four week course includes patterns and textbook. It is fun with lots of intensive basic training in the disciplines of sewing, which targets confidence, independence, and accuracy in sewing. We won’t make you run laps or do push-ups, but we will make you have fun! In four short weeks, you’ll acquire numerous sewing skills including how to use a sewing machine, sewing straight and curved seams, hand-sewing, buttonholes, zippers, finishing, appliqué techniques and embellishments! Projects include a pin cushion, a funky fashionable scarf, a zippered cosmetic bag, a pillow with button closures, and Tokyo tie bag. Each project will get you closer to graduating from our sewing boot camp, and you’ll have fun “earning your stripes” by completing the confidence- building projects. Now that you can successfully read and follow a pattern, it’s time to take it to the next level and create your own patterns. In this class you will learn how to start your own flat pattern collection that is created to perfectly fit your body. In the flat pattern making class, you’ll learn to draft paper pattern pieces for two garments: a simple skirt and a knit top. We’ll practice fitting the garment to your body specifically through making a muslin sloper. By the end of the class, you’ll have acquired the skills to make a perfectly fitting wardrobe for yourself! **** This class assumes you have Beginning Sewing and Sewing Fundamentals under your belt (or equivalent skills) and have either taken our Patterns classes or have experience sewing clothing from a pattern–you’ll need a basic knowledge of sewing apparel to really get the most out of the lessons. This is a four week course that will teach you all of the processes and skills necessary for completing this challenge. **** This class requires you to have taken the first class of Fundamentals of Modern Pattern Making and uses the same textbook for this class. Next Steps, Fundamentals of Modern Pattern Making III Now that you have made your own skirt and bodice pattern, are you imagining yourself ready to draft your own pattern for a well-fitted pair of slacks? This is a four week course that will teach you all of the processes and skills necessary for completing this challenge. **** This class requires you to have taken the first class of Fundamentals of Modern Pattern Making and uses the same textbook for this class. June: Fridays, June 7, 14, 21 and 28, 6:00 PM - 9:00 PM Pattern Fitting with Joyce Hittesdorf Are you often discouraged when you sew a great garment but it doesn’t fit? This class will give you the basic areas to be checked on each pattern you buy. If you gain an understanding of your body and how to alter the pattern for a good fit your whole sewing experience will drastically change. Each student will begin by having their measurements taken to determine the ideal pattern size to start with. Each critical body area will be discussed and the student will learn how to adjust her pattern in that area if necessary. Initial alterations will be done on Butterick pattern number 5627. Each student will make a muslin of the altered pattern to be fit checked at the second class. The instruction will end with discussion of how to transfer the alterations to any commercial pattern with time to begin that process in the second class. Cost: $125 for the two week course. Fine Finishing Techniques With Joyce Hittesdorf Do you sew garments and then think they look a “little homemade”? Come to this class and learn a few techniques to make your sewing look more professional and upscale. Learn the quick and easy way to make beautiful bound buttonholes and envelope pockets. Cover shoulder pads to match the lining of your garment as well as covering snaps for that upscale finish. Learn the secret to the tiniest bias straps as well as ways to use them to create a “one of a kind look.” The class will be demo then actual practice so you can make sure you understand the process. You will begin by making your dress out of muslin; Sarah will then help fit and adjust your pattern before you begin making your actual dress. You will learn pressing techniques, working with a silk lining and putting in an invisible zipper. Or do you avoid it altogether? This class will remove the dread of putting in zippers. You will learn all about the different kinds of zippers, as well as how to select appropriate zippers for your sewing projects. The class will include demos of how to put in a standard zipper and an invisible zipper, and how to shorten zippers when the size of zipper needed does not match what is available for purchase. Participants will sew their own samples of a centered zipper, a lapped zipper, and an invisible zipper. Cost: $45 for the class. June: Thursdays, June 6, 13 and 20, 6:00 PM - 9:00 PM Master Quilter Mary Buvia: Beginning, Free Motion Quilting The Beginning Free Motion Class is a two-part class designed for the beginning quilter or persons wanting to learn how to do free-motion quilting. Participants benefit from an eight-page provided informative hand-out, which has a feather quilting design included, as well as an original, copyrighted design for quilting. An easy, five-step approach is taught, which is helpful for understanding this quilting technique. There will be a complete discussion on the use of threads, needles, batting, and fabric preparation. The class is conducted in two, 4-hour sessions, one week apart, with a total of 8 hours of instruction. Class space is limited to eight participants. There is a minimum of six for the class to be held. Mary's Beginning Free Motion Machine Quilting Class is a pre-requisite. Designs and background studies are given in a full-size, clearly drawn permanent pattern. The January class will focus on a new pattern that Mary has created as a sampler of new background designs to use with free motion quilting. There is a minimum of five students for the class to be held. Cost: $60 for class; participants need to bring their own machines and supplies Master Quilter, Mary Buvia: Invisible Applique This 5-hour class is designed for the sewist or quilter who wants to learn how to stitch with Mary’s award-winning method for invisible appliqué. The class is based on techniques from Mary’s “Loading Dock” quilt book and includes hands-on preparation, cutting, and stitching. This technique can be used for either machine stitching or hand stitching appliqués to background fabric. However, the machine stitching technique will be learned in class. You will learn how to create one of the elf patterns in her book, from start to finish. Join this four week class and learn all of the skills necessary to make a quilt from start to finish. Learn the cutting process, how to strip piece, how to layer the backing, batting, and quilt top, how to do the machine quilting, and how to do bias binding to finish your quilt. Complete a throw-sized quilt with fabulous fabric from a new Amy Butler collection or fabric of your choice, all in four weeks! Hand Embroidery Learn how to do hand embroidery on linens with fun, modern designs which can be used on a variety of projects, from bed linens, kitchen linens, and even children’s clothing! The stitches and techniques you will learn can even be used to do crazy quilting stitches. In July, we will be learning with some cute holiday patterns! Cost: $60 for the class includes the textbook. English Paper Piecing Learn how to do English Paper Piecing, which is a technique for hand-piecing quilt blocks together. You will learn all of the skills necessary to make a small wall-hanging or doll blanket. If you really fall in love with this technique, you will have all of the skills needed to make larger quilt tops. It is great for using up all of those colorful fat quarters or scraps of fabric that are hidden away in your stash. Cost: $50 for the class.
